JFK was our young new president. Elvis, Roy Orbison and Patsy Kline topped the charts. A large pizza cost a buck. WWII Veteran Arthur Castraberti had a wife, three young children, a good education and a great job with Prince Spaghetti in Lowell, MA.

The year was 1961 and Arthur’s life was about to change.

Prince Spaghetti owned a 12 seat drive-in pizza stand and “spaghetti house” in Saugus—often referred to as an Italian Howard Johnson’s. It was losing money. Prince’s president thought Arthur could turn it around. He had no idea just how right he was. But Arthur was not interested in management by committee. He wanted to own the place.

Arthur and Prince made a deal. No money down, no interest. Arthur had to make good on the failed business’ debts in 10 years and the place was his.

“I had never been in a restaurant kitchen until I bought one,” says Arthur. “When I walked in, I saw two employees—a waitress in the corner reading, and a cook flat on his back asleep. I introduced myself and fired them both. ’But how will you run the place without us?’ they protested. ‘Oh, a great deal better, I imagine.’“

Arthur called his 65 year old father, Oreste. “You know how to make sauce, don’t you pop? Well, I could use your help.” Oreste, a talented cook, worked with Arthur to develop the original Prince Sauce that has made them famous today.

Sales climbed, but they were not enough to cover the debt. “I owed more than I ever thought I could pay. That was my incentive to work harder,” says Arthur. With a family to support and a mortgage every month, Arthur needed income and the restaurant did not make enough for him to draw a salary. So Arthur taught school. Every weekday, he would race from school to the restaurant and work until closing. Weekends he just worked at the restaurant. There were no employees. “It was a terrible time,” he laughs today.

After five long years of tremendously hard work, Arthur began to sense some progress. “I cleaned up the place; gave it heart.” Arthur had transformed Prince into a warm family restaurant where people can relax. He gave huge discounts to the Little League teams, who considered Prince their second home. Seniors received a free meal on Arthur’s parents’ birthdays—a tradition still practiced today.

“I sowed the seeds of my success when I could least afford it,” remembers Arthur fondly. “I took in the kids and the seniors and now those kids come back with their own families and their own teams.”

A few years later, Arthur had finally saved enough money to expand the restaurant. “Every part of this building is an appendage of my body,” asserts Arthur today. “Every expansion was paid for in cash. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

After several expansions over a 10 year period, Prince boasted a large dining room and three function rooms. Then in 1978, Prince added the highly successful 175 seat Giggles Comedy Club, which is now sold out almost every week. Prince Restaurant currently offers seating for about 700 people.

For 44 years, while growing Prince Restaurant into a legendary icon, Arthur Castraberti became known as one of the Boston Area’s most successful restaurateurs. During that time, he poured his heart into the community. He became president of the Route 1 Business Association, founded the Saugus Chamber of Commerce and supported dozens of charities including the Little Leagues, local schools, the Neurofibromatosis and Make a Wish Foundations and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

According to the Boston Globe, Arthur Castraberti is “is one of the visionary entrepreneurs who built Route 1 as we know and love it.”

In 2005, Arthur’s son, Steven, took over ownership of Prince Pizzeria and runs it with his wife, Trisha, who oversees finance, marketing and recently redesigned the Comedy Club and function Rooms.

Steven and Trisha are both active in the community, supporting schools, sports teams and charities. Trisha serves on the North Shore Music Theatre Board of Trustees and was nominated for the honor of 2007 North of Boston Businesswoman of the Year.

Arthur is still actively involved, dividing his time between Gloucester, MA and Sarasota Florida, where he volunteers at in the Cardiac Rehab unit of Doctor’s Hospital.

“Steven is doing an excellent job,” says Arthur Castraberti, “We’re just a family business. We worked hard. We still work hard. We live a good life and don’t worry about what the competition does. We focus on what we do.”

Billy Costa Reviews Prince Pizzeria Route 1 Saugus on T.V. Diner!

Prince Pizzeria has received numerous awards, including being voted Best Pizza of the North Shore and is often called, “one of our favorite family-style restaurants in New England,” as VisitNewEngland.com puts it. The Phantom Gourmet says Prince is “ideal for feeding a family or a party.”

Don’t take their word for it. Come in and see for yourself. You’ll feel part of the family in no time.

Kowloon – An Urgent Message to the Town of Saugus

From the Kowloon Restaurant Owners & Employees

Please Say NO to the Rollback!!! Call your Selectmen Now: 781-231-4124

Why this Message:

This is a movement by a group of residents to have operating hours of Liquor License holders’ rollback to 1 am.

This would be Absolutely Devastating to our businesses and the livelihood of our employees.

We a Family Owned, independent restaurant that has been in Saugus 59 years!!!! (Only Kowloon and Prince are owned by the original families) Longer than most residents have lived in Saugus.

Using a broad stroke and blanket approach to solve isolated problems is not FAIR!

We can’t afford to lose more hours!

A few years ago… we had already suffered a 10% Loss in Sales after a 2 hour rollback of our hours from 3:30 to 1:30 am! And we will lose another 10% if our hours are cut again.

We can’t and our employees can’t afford to lost anymore income

Although other restaurants such as McDonald’s, Dunkin Donuts, and I-Hop are allowed to stay open (24 Hours!)… Because we are a liquor license holder… we have to force all of our customers out of the building by 2:00 am.

Even though NO LIQOUR is served after 2:00 am we are not allowed to sell food or even take-out orders after that hour! And our doors have to be locked at 1:15 am so no new customers can enter.

Do you know what impact this new rollback will have on us? (As well as others)

If the rollback succeeds we will have to FORCE all of our customers out of the building by 1:00 am.

That means we must lock our doors at 12:15 (just after midnight) So that any new customers will be out in time!!!

We do over 10% of food and beverage business after MIDNIGHT!

List of some people we will lose:

We attract a well behaved crowd looking for a place to go, why else would parents form all over, drop off their school aged children after a school dance, prom, drama club play, or other reasons (all after midnight!!!)

We attract workers leaving their late night jobs. Such as airline employees, other restaurant employees, hospital workers and many others.

We attract people coming back after a show, a movie or sporting event looking for a late night snack or meal.

We also attract numerous celebrities. Such as professional wrestlers, (70 of them recently… after their event)

Red Sox owner John Henry and actor Don Wahlberg have stopped by after a concert.

Professional athletes come in after the game.

All of these people need and want a place to go after MIDNIGHT.

We have already lost a large portion of these customers from the last rollback and now we stand to lose EVEN MORE!!!

Why do this to us AGAIN?

We are in a terrible recession and business is already down!!!

It’s ironic that the town voted to increase local meals tax to 7% there by receiving ¾% in local aid to help solve our fiscal crisis during this very BAD ECONOMY.

Our costs are constantly RISING! (as everyone’s are!)

The Kowloon has not laid off a single person (we have over 250 employees that depend on us!)

Mandatory Health Insurance has increased our costs!

Water and Sewer rates increased. We now pay over $300,000 yearly.

Real Estate Tax – approximately $280,000 yearly.

Gas and Electric – over $350,000 yearly.

People do not flock to us from other towns for last call!!! We lock our doors at 1:15 am – and they would never make it in time.

We are good citizens!

We feel we have been good partners in the community and will always give back.

Does the majority of the community want to do this to us??? Or is it only the wish of a few? And Why?

We strongly urge many of the people involved with various organizations in town, to let our leaders know you support us. We could use your voice, phone calls to you selectmen, and help!!!

The Solution:

So before you decide on creating a one-size fits all remedy please remember you do have alternative.

You can treat each establishment individually. If there is a pattern of abuse or problem the town can take action on each separately.

Our town leaders should be aware that they do have alternatives, and obligations to not only take care of its problems but also to let Good Business and Community Partners thrive and succeed.

We have been here 59 years and have been loyal and hopefully good for the town… and it would be EXTREMELY unfair (again!) for a few people in Saugus to be able to judge all liquor license holders the same. We are not!

Respectfully on behalf of the Wong family and our employees,

- Bob Wong

With his wife Irene, as the hostess, they worked seven days a week and before long the Hilltop became the number One Steakhouse, a title it still holds today. Frank was soon known to be the “king of the Hill” serving over three million customers annually. His success was largely due to his generous nature, which he reflected into his business with great quality and quantity. The Hilltop is still known today for it’s quality and generous portions at a great value.

Over the course of the past 40 years Hilltop has won numerous awards and accolades. Most recently Hilltop was awarded #1 Steakhouse (City search 2003), #2 Independent Restaurant (Restaurant & Institutions Magazine 2002) and many more.

Dick Monfort of High Country Investors in Colorado, acquired assets of the Saugus Hilltop In October 1994.

The Hilltop Steak House Restaurant in Saugus has five rooms function rooms for business meetings, bridal showers, family events, and elegant weddings.

We also offer an off premise catering division called “The Chuck Wagon”. The Chuck Wagon concept is simple. With a minimum of fifty people you can hire us to do a barbecue anywhere, corporate or private. We come to your place of business, backyard, park, beach etc. We cook and serve a menu that you pre-select. We bring everything needed for a barbecue. Grills, chefs, wait staff, buffet tables, all paper goods, condiments etc. We cook, serve and clean up.

The Chuck Wagon has been very popular and has blossomed into a full service catering business. In addition to our now famous barbecues, we do clam bakes, weddings, showers, anniversaries, holiday parties etc. A sampling of our menu is available online at the host station and in the catering office.

Kowloon Restaurant, with a capacity of 1200 seats, was established by the Wong Family in 1950 and has grown to become one of the premier multi-concept dining establishments in the United States.

Courtesy of: www.hiddenboston.com

Boy, do I love Route 1 in Saugus. From the huge dinosaur overlooking a miniature golf course to a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa at Prince Pizza, Route 1 is perhaps the most tacky, cheesy road in the Boston area (not that this is a bad thing). And perhaps one of the cheesiest, and most fun places along Route 1 is the Kowloon, a huge Chinese restaurant and entertainment complex on the northbound side of this road.

The Kowloon has a number of different rooms, complete with funky Polynesian themes, including a boat hanging from the ceiling, a lagoon surrounded by tables, and a luau room. We actually were seated in one of the more subdued rooms off to the side, where we went on to order some rather…interesting dishes. Mine, for instance, was as wacky as the restaurant itself.

I ordered the flaming ambrosia, which is made as follows: Hollow out a pineapple; put a bunch of chicken fingers inside; fill the pineapple to the top with duck sauce; insert pineapple chunks and maraschino cherries; pour alcohol over the whole thing; set it all on fire. Now I’m not saying that it was delicious (and it definitely was not healthy), but it was a dinner that I will never forget!

And, of course, I can’t wait to go back to the Kowloon, as it epitomizes what is so unique about this stretch of highway north of Boston.

If you want the address for the Kowloon, here it is: Kowloon Restaurant, 948 Broadway (Route 1 North), Saugus, MA 01906. The phone number is (781) 233-0077.

Kowloon, China? No — Kowloon, Saugus: If you have…

May 14, 2006 | 11:05 am

Courtesy of: www.davecopeland.com

Kowloon, China? No — Kowloon, Saugus: If you have ever lived on the North Shore in Massachusetts, you’ll know why you’re allowed to make fun of the weekend I had when I type the next sentence: I went to Kowloon last night.

For those of you who haven’t been, Kowloon is a gaudy, tiki bar/Polynesian restaurant with an identity crisis on Route 1 North in Saugus (Route 1 is a story unto itself). I was out to the comedy club tucked into the leaking attic of the restaurant with my softball team (we lose a lot but we still have fun). And the comedy was good — we saw three comics, including Jim Dunn of Farrelly Brothers movie fame.

The restaurant, however, was exactly how I remembered it. Which was a lot less than good.

The menu is expansive, full of lead-laden dishes from a variety of different countries and culinary styles, with PuPu platters that drop to the bottom of your stomach like a brick and sushi that is, at best, suspect. Each section of the menu is color-coded for different types of cuisine: red for Chinese, sky blue for sushi, orange for Thai, etc.

Not much has changed in Kowloon since it first opened in 1950. It’s a place full of multiple banquet rooms, fake palm trees and cocktails served in plastic pineapple cups. When I was in high school it was the kind of place you’d go to after a prom if you had a bad date or if you had a good fake i.d. I think the last time I was there was at least 10 years ago, on Christmas night with a couple of friends who, like me, had nothing better to do after a day with our respective families.

And despite all this, there were throngs of people flooding into Kowloon even after our show got out at 9. It’s the type of place where middle aged men who haven;t played sports in 20 years can feel comfortable wearing nylon warm up suits. There are wanna-be toughs pulling I-Rocs up to the valet. There are huge family gatherings, a high school field trip and people who think that a Scorp Bowl for two is a perfectly acceptable drink to order three or four times — for themselves — is perfectly acceptable.

To know why Kowloon remains so popular is to know Route 1. After college I took a job as a community reporter on the South Shore and was surprised at how many more zoning disputes there were in the quaint South Shore towns. And the reason? They didn’t have a Route 1 to throw all the places that no one else wanted in their backyard.

Want to build a massively tacky Chinese restaurant? Put it on Route 1. Big box retail? Route 1. Route 1 is the perfect place for a giant steak house with scores of life-sized plastic cattle grazing on the patch of lawn between the building and the highway. Want to open a porn store? Sleazy motels that boast heart-shaped jacuzzis and rent rooms by the hour? A strip bar? Put it on Route 1. How about a miniature golf course with a day-glo orange Tyrannosaurus Rex hovering over the highway? You guessed it — Route 1.

Hooters Rt. 1 Saugus MA

By the end of the summer Hooters waitresses dressed in hot orange shorts will be serving up the company’s trademark chicken wings at a franchise in Saugus.

The Board of Selectmen voted 4-0 Tuesday to transfer an all alcoholic common victualer’s license to Saugus Wings LLC, paving the way for a Hooters to open at 1143 Broadway, the location formerly occupied by Famous Dave’s BBQ.

Board members approved the application after Saugus Wings LLC agreed to not hire employees under 18 and to post the Hooters corporation’s non-harassment policy in a visible location.

Saugus Wings LLC is the official name of the company that will be doing business as Hooters on Route 1 South.

Franchise owners Marc Phaneuf and his son Marc Phaneuf Jr. appeared before the selectmen to request the transfer of the all-alcoholic license from the parent company of Famous Dave’s.

Additionally, the Phaneufs asked the board to grant an entertainment license to accommodate 25 to 30 flat screen televisions and a satellite radio system inside the restaurant.

Phaneuf told the selectmen his group has 15 years of experience running three different Hooters restaurants in Connecticut, where it established an exemplary track record.

In his opening presentation Phaneuf described Hooters as a “casual sit down restaurant” with chicken wings as its mainstay menu item. He stressed management doesn’t tolerate rowdiness and that staff are TIPS certified and trained at recognizing fraudulent forms of identification.

Selectman Michael Kelleher grilled Saugus Wings LLC with several questions concerning sexual harassment.

For instance, Kelleher inquired what Saugus Wings LLC plans to do to make sure employees aren’t sexually harassed on the job.

Phaneuf Jr. responded that Hooters follows an open door policy in which employees are encouraged to discuss workplace problems confidentially with management.

If the issue cannot be resolved this way, employees are welcome to take their concerns to a district supervisor, Phaneuf Jr. informed the board.

Kelleher also questioned if Hooters employs any workers under 18 years old.

Phaneuf Jr. acknowledged Hooters does in fact hire kitchen staff who have yet to turn 18. That prompted Kelleher to ask if Saugus Wings LLC would agree to a stipulation to only hire employees who are 18 and over.

“I’d prefer not to, but as long as we don’t break any state laws, I’d be willing to agree to that,” Phaneuf Jr. said.

No bikini nights

Saugus Wings LLC also indicated it would display the Hooters non-harassment policy in the employee break room. Phaneuf Jr. added that his Saugus franchise would refrain from hosting the bikini night promotions held at other Hooters locations throughout the country.

After a half-hour of questions the selectmen voted 4-0 in favor of the application submitted by Saugus Wings LLC. Chairman Donald Wong recused himself from the discussion over a conflict of interest because he is the president of Kowloon.

“I think this will be a plus for the town and I wish them (Hooters) the best of luck,” Selectman Stephen Horlick said.

Coming by Labor Day

Following the public hearing, Phaneuf Jr. told the Advertiser renovation on the building at 1143 Broadway is scheduled to begin shortly. The expectation is for construction to take between two and three months.

“We are shooting for an August opening,” Phaneuf Jr. said. “We’re very pleased with the outcome tonight and we are happy the selectmen allowed us to bring our restaurant to Saugus.”

Hours of operation at the Saugus location will be 11 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Saugus Wings LLC was awarded the rights to open a restaurant in Massachusetts after the previous group that sought to do the same went into bankruptcy.

In 2003 the selectmen voted 3-1 to deny Triangle Entertainment an application to open a Hooters at the former Tantra nightclub.

At the time board members cited community opposition as a reason for their decision, as well as expressing concern that Hooters is a restaurant where innuendo and joking about female sex appeal are part of the work environment.

Triangle Entertainment appealed the decision to the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, which overturned the board’s denial.

That led the selectmen to take a second vote to allow Hooters to open at Tantra, but the franchise owners never followed through with the plan because of financial difficulties.

During Monday’s public hearing no one spoke against the latest proposal to open a Hooters in town.

In fact, one resident wrote the board a letter in which he indicated the town could do a lot worse if some other business moves in to 1143 Broadway.

Kelleher conceded the Hooters brand is not one he welcomes with open arms for Saugus. However, he noted past experience on the board has shown him the ABCC would likely overturn any denial of the application and potentially cost the town thousands of dollars in attorney fees.

Many New England childhoods have been scarred by heartbreaking Boston Red Sox teams, the end of the Larry Bird and Bobby Orr eras, and the closure of the carnival atmospheres at Paragon Park and Pleasure Island. But for me, I was scarred in a most endearing way by the cheesiest road in America, Route One in Saugus and Lynnfield, MA.

I will never get out of my mind that stupid, lime green 50 foot tall dinosaur (currently orange) at the miniature golf course. He always peered over drivers on Route One with the most pathetic smile. It really had no purpose at a miniature golf course. I always thought it would have looked better at a toll booth, or perhaps at a hospital entrance. Regardless, that stupid lime green 50 foot tall dinosaur has served as a microcosm of what resides on this famed “slice of Americana” road. Some of my best memories include:

The Diamond Head Restaurant, now closed, was famous for its huge triangle entrance. The structure was supposed to recreate some sort of Asian architecture, but ended up looking more like a bloated teepee. Inside the staff served food to go along with the MSG. The Diamond Head had a reputation as a breeding ground for future alcoholics, although one could argue that the mountains of MSG had a far more deleterious effect.

Augustine’s, also now closed, sported the world’s oldest woman playing modern pop songs on an out of tune organ. Her playing Beatles songs on that decrepid keyboard set music back many years, and perhaps helped create what we now know as acid reflux. Augustine’s had some excellent Italian food until they started featuring a buffet table about five times the size of that stupid lime green dinosaur and with every known tv dinner specialty. Like the dinosaur, Augustine’s and the organ player soon became extinct.

Courtesy of: www.theorangedinosaur.com

The Hilltop Steak House features beautiful plastic cows in front of the restaurant and seats several hundred people within several rooms at one of the largest and best-known steakhouses in America. I remember walking down the long corridor to the area where a lady with blue hair and a smoker’s voice said, “Number 2,000, honey, go have a drink in the bar. Three hour wait.” At the bar always seemed to be some overweight guy with a square head and disproportionate hairpiece, smoking one cigarette after another. Beside them was always a woman with platinum blonde hair and a quick temper. It was from these people that I was introduced to profanity.

The Hilltop’s aged steaks are quite good but you have to remember once you finally get a seat you are an aged person. I once entered the Hilltop as a high school freshman and left with a B.A. in journalism and mass communications.

Valle’s Steak House, now closed (do you detect a pattern here?) was the place to go when you couldn’t get into the Hilltop. People usually came here with their heads hung low, quite dejected about not being able to get into the Hilltop. I don’t remember much about Valle’s. It was hard to eat steak with your head hung low. I never really saw the decor because of the same reason.

If Valle’s were open today, they would probably offer Prozac to their customers.

The Prince Restaurant stills stands tall, with the exception of the “Leaning Tower of Pizza,” a humongous structure on top of the restaurant emulating Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa. As a child, my lifelong hope was for that structure to finally break and crash down on top of the cars on Route One. As I matured, however, I realized that this was a bad thought. It’s neat to acquire common sense at age 32.

The Prince still offers some of the best pizza served by truly great people. I remember with fondness former owner Arthur who took care of us like we were first family. Perhaps your children will experience this fun place.

The Ship (Mount Vernon Restaurant) stills looks out of place. I’m not sure why. Perhaps it might be the fact that a Titanic sized authentic ship is nowhere near the ocean. Lake Suntaug is close by, so perhaps at night the Ship sailed across the lake to exchange bad food with the Bali Hai Chinese restaurant.

The Bali Hai. Is that Chinese for food poisoning? While it is not on Route One, it’s close enough to be mentioned. I remember…old Asian men in Hawaiian shirts playing “Don’t You Love Her Madly,” by the Doors. I remember getting food poisoning twice. I remember fish tanks with dead fish. I remember sterno darting into my forehead. I remember waiters lying about no MSG in the food — my head knew otherwise. I now remember never to go back again.

How about the giant sausage in front of Karl’s Sausage Kitchen? It actually rivaled that stupid lime green 50 foot dinosaur as one of America’s more peculiar sites. Karl’s Sausage Kitchen was never open. Where was Karl?

The Kowloon. Some of my friends had their first and last date at the Kowloon. Could it have been the plastic tiki Gods, the waterfalls, the combination of Cantonese, Szechuan, Polynesian and Thai cuisines and a comedy club all under one roof? Or the Chinese version of Disneyworld look of the exterior? I wonder how many accidents were caused by drivers being stunned by this architectural gem. All in all , however, the Kowloon has always served truly exceptional food by an amazingly nice staff.

Years have passed and Route One is still one of America’s hideous gems. With two young daughters, perhaps soon they will experience Route One North in Saugus and Lynnfield. If I hear laughter in the back of the car, I will know why. It’s easy to laugh when you are driving by stupid 50 foot lime green dinosaurs, plastic cows, and leaning pizza towers.

Traditions are indeed, priceless
