Fiddlesticks has moved!
Years ago I used to frequent this very location,
except it was a fabric store called Silver Thimble.
The store moved down the street to a barn, which
eventually changed ownership, and became Fiddlesticks.
The “full-circle” connection about this story is Fiddlesticks
is now located in the original location of the fabric shop.

Diane and I met taking painting lessons
at the Abby-Rose. I am a regular customer to her shop,
and over the years we have become better acquainted.

The old barn had a warm and cozy feel about it.
But the new shop is not only inviting, it’s Stunning!
Diane wasted no time painting the walls to fit
her color palette in soothing taupes, white and sage green.

The shop is known for it’s mix of antiques
and repurposed furniture.

Over the years I have learned Diane has a natural ability
to decorate a room with such good taste.

Diane also enjoys creating beautiful silk flower arrangements.
Her partner Maureen, contributes her expertise
and knowledge of antiques.
They truly compliment one another,
combining their strengths to make a great team.

A local artist paints lovely landscapes of old
New England style homes on stools, luggage, tin
and wooden banners.

You can expect to find a selection of scented candles
and sprays, which I personally endorse as the best around.
This little nook leads up to the second story.

The charming layout is spacious, and
arranged in such a way, you can easily
imagine it in your own home.

Another wide angle view of the second floor.

The old faithful “Fiddlesticks” sign holds
a place of honor
on the back wall.

Swatches of fabric are available to
customize furniture to fit your decor.

Bolts of homespun, and special cuts of wool are available.
Rughooking classes have been offered in the past,
and similar classes are being considered
in the future as well.

This view shows the open door on the back wall,
allowing fresh air to circulate through the shop.
If you are familiar with this area, there are
days you can smell the ocean air.

Leading from the main shop, is a room reserved for garden
themed decorating, as well as an outside cubby area,
unique to the shop.

and shelving? You can expect to find this
type of furniture on a regular basis.

Come February shoppers will have a restaurant to satisfy their hunger pangs at the Square One Mall.

The Board of Selectmen voted 3-0 to grant Twitters Bar & Grille an all-alcoholic common victualer’s license to operate what manager John Carlino termed a family-style restaurant in the spot once occupied by Iron Works Grill and Tavern.

Twitters Bar & Grille, a 5,700 sq. ft. parcel located at the Square One Mall entrance near the bus stop, will feature 165 restaurant seats and a 12-seat bar.

Board members allotted Twitters Bar & Grille a new liquor license the legislature awarded the town per request of Town Meeting.

In his application Carlino proposed a 2 a.m. closing time in order to accommodate the occasional function or special event.

The 2 a.m. request troubled a number of homeowners who attended the public hearing to urge the selectmen to shorten the hours of operation.

Fiske Avenue resident Christopher Kiley told the board he is wary of vehicles peeling out of the mall at night when he already has to contend with tractor-trailers and landscapers early in the morning.

“The Square One Mall isn’t a good neighbor,” Kiley asserted.

Susan Yee, manager at the Square One Mall, said that complaints regarding excessive noise are dealt with appropriately. She clarified that her company doesn’t control the adjoining Sears parcel where most of the problems with trucks have surfaced.

Essex Street resident Sandra Casella expressed concern over the possibility of additional noise in the abutting neighborhood.

Casella suggested Twitters Bar & Grille should close around the same time as Square One Mall tenants – 9 or 10 p.m. for the most part – and not stay open several hours later.

Town Meeting Member Janet Leuci said she “absolutely, vehemently” opposed the granting of a 2 a.m. license at the Square One Mall.

While Leuci acknowledged everyone wants the Square One Mall to do well, she emphasized it can’t come at the expense of the town or its residents.

Leuci argued that the shopping center doesn’t need a restaurant serving drinks until 2 a.m. to succeed.

“If we don’t learn from history we’re condemned to repeat it,” Leuci said. “We don’t want to see it morph into a problem nightclub.”

Another neighbor of the Square One Mall worried about drunk drivers leaving the restaurant presenting a public safety threat to the residential area.

Accidents caused by inebriated motorists also weighed heavily on the mind of Town Meeting member Bob Cox.

“To have a full alcohol license and entertainment license and allow it to open after hours, I don’t see the justification,” Cox said. “You’re taking on additional risks to abutters and drivers on Route 1.”

Carlino let the board know that he has supervised the Exchange Street Bistro in Malden for the last 3 ½ years without any problems developing.

Addressing the concerns voiced by homeowners, Carlino stressed that he has no plans to turn Twitters Bar & Grille into a nightclub.

“We’re a restaurant in a mall, I don’t want a club,” Carlino said.

The point behind bringing a restaurant to the Square One Mall is to give people an option other than the food court to enjoy a meal or unwind with a few drinks, Yee said.

With only a 12-seat bar and no live entertainment Twitters Bar & Grille could never become a nightclub, Yee noted.

After hearing from all parties the selectmen voted 3-0 to establish a midnight closing time at Twitters, with last call at 11:30 p.m.

Board members also awarded Twitters an entertainment license for five televisions on site.

Following the vote Leuci said she was disappointed with the board’s decision and wished members went with an earlier closing time instead.

SAUGUS – The Board of Selectmen called for show cause hearings for both Tabu Ultra Lounge and Nightclub and Zaza Restaurant and Nitery following weekend visits by police officers to both establishments.

Officer Daniel Wing stopped by Zaza’s on Route 1 north Sunday at just a few minutes past the 2 a.m. closing time because he reported that he could see patrons inside as well as at a small fenced-in table area located just outside the front door and the patrons appeared to be drinking.

According to the town’s liquor rules and regulations, last call for alcohol is 1:30 a.m. and all patrons must be off the licensed property by 2 a.m.

Police reports indicated the manager said he stopped serving at 1:25 a.m. but patrons were still drinking inside at 2:03 a.m.

Selectmen said Tuesday that was enough for a show cause hearing. The board has been working hard to take a proactive stance with clubs and restaurants, calling them in as soon as a violation takes place rather than letting incidents pile up as they have been accused of in the past.

The board also said it would bring Tabu officials in for a hearing based on two incidents where owners simply opened their door.

Late last year, the board called for, but never scheduled a hearing regarding a fight and shots fired at Mobil on the Run at 1123 Broadway that was tied back to Tabu.

Tuesday, board members said they also received a Police Department memo stating that the club might be operating in violation of its liquor license, largely because it was open. The Amato family, who owns the property, said they foreclosed on the business owners on Jan. 15 because they had stopped paying on the lease. While town officials said they were told the club would close, Frank Amato said Monday that Tabu never closed. That means that Amato has been operating in violation of his liquor license because he never applied to have the license transferred from the former owners back into the family name.

Selectman Michael Serino said attorney Ira Zaleznik, who represents the town on liquor license matters, sent Tabu a letter dated Jan. 22 telling them “they were operating at their own peril.

“While the board voted to hold the show cause hearings, it put off setting a date for them to its next meeting on Feb. 16. Selectman Scott Crabtree said the board, as well as the club owners, would have a better idea of available dates at that point.

SAUGUS – Police found the lights on and patrons still drinking alcohol past closing time at Zaza Restaurant and Nitery, early Sunday.

At approximately 2:03 a.m., a Saugus police officer reported seeing nearly a dozen people inside the establishment located at 114 Broadway.

A small crowd of people were also spotted in the outside, fenced in table area located outside the front doors.

The officer said he walked inside and saw a woman consuming a glass of what appeared to be white wine, and a man drinking a bottle of Budweiser beer.

At that point, an employee alerted the owner, who started telling patrons that they had to leave the bar.

While the owner reportedly told police that he stopped serving alcohol at 1:25 a.m., the officer said there were still patrons drinking alcohol past 2 a.m.

No further information was made available Sunday night.

Route 114 dealerships to raze Allenhurst, build sprawling campus

By Ethan Forman

Article Courtesy of: The Salem News

DANVERS — Two large dealerships on Route 114 are consolidating into one campus on the busy stretch some refer to as Danvers’ version of the “Automile.”

The moves will spell the end of the road for the familiar Jimmy’s Allenhurst banquet facility, 101 Andover St., as of April 1, said the restaurant’s general manager, John MacDonald. If plans are approved, it would be demolished to make way for the new home of Ira Lexus.

The shuffle also involves the relocation of Ira Toyota, which would move to the Lexus property at 99 Andover St.

The Zoning Board of Appeals this month granted variances that would allow the creation of an Ira Motor Group campus, putting Ira Toyota, Lexus, Subaru, Mazda and Porsche at one location.

Along with the increase in dealerships and commercial development on Route 114 has come more traffic. The number of vehicles traveling on the roadway has increased from an average of 33,300 per day in 1998 to 41,600 in 2005, the latest year available from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Proponents of the dealership plan promise the project will smooth traffic for everyone on bustling Route 114 by shutting off three driveways at the Allenhurst property.

Instead, a new main driveway would be built to the Ira dealerships at the traffic light at Brooksby Village Drive. All cars would turn left into the campus at a light, rather than navigating middle turning lanes, said Danvers attorney Nancy McCann, who represents Group 1 Realty, the company pushing the plan.

The present driveway into the dealerships has become “undesirable for both customers of the dealership and those traveling on Route 114,” McCann said in an application to the board. She would not give a timeline or cost for the project.

Route 114 in Danvers, some residents say, has become an “Automile” of sorts, a term used by dealers on Route 1 in Norwood.

Danvers’ version is more condensed, but it also hosts dealers that have more than one dealership in one location, including Herb Chambers Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac and Hummer and Herb Chambers Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Sprinter, which is down the road from Jimmy’s Allenhurst. There are also stand-alone Michaud Mitsubishi and Kelly Infiniti dealerships.

The move of the Toyota dealership from its present location opens the possibility that the Rosenberg family, which owns the property, could return to Danvers and sell cars from the facility the family built in the mid-1990s. The family sold the dealerships in 2000 to Group 1 Automotive.

“I’d love to have a dealership back in Danvers at my old Toyota property,” said David Rosenberg, president of Westwood-based Prime Motor Group. Rosenberg said he has no concrete plans to move back to Danvers. The lease on the property runs out in December 2014.

A Marblehead resident, Rosenberg said he was well aware of Group 1’s move to create a campus on Route 114.

“I know they were under a lot of pressure by Lexus and Toyota to update their buildings,” Rosenberg said.

A representative of Group 1 could not be reached after several attempts.

End of an era at Allenhurst

Group 1 has wanted to expand its campus and move its driveway for a long time, but Jimmy’s Allenhurst stood in the way, McCann said. The company recently struck a deal with the restaurant’s owners. Terms of the deal were not supplied with the application to the zoning board.

The dealership dance will spell the end of Jimmy’s Allenhurst and Spero’s Sports Pub and Grill.

“People are pretty upset,” said MacDonald, the general manager, who has worked there for 17 years. “It’s an institution.”

The restaurant used to be called Allen & Hurst, according to Jimmy Allenhurst’s Web site.

That was until 1972 when James “Jimmy” Spero Demakes bought it and renamed it. He later expanded it to include four ballrooms and a cocktail room. The facility attracted a lot of repeat christenings, weddings and other functions, MacDonald said, which is unusual in the function business.

All five of former Peabody Mayor Peter Torigian’s daughters had weddings at Jimmy’s Allenhurst, MacDonald said. The function facility was family-run, with the owners doing the cooking, and that brought a lot of repeat business.

“That is one of the ingredients that brought people back,” MacDonald said.

Senior Planner Kate Day said she has not seen plans for the dealership shuffle, which McCann said would not be filed with the Planning Board for at least a couple of months.

Any reduction in the number of driveways along Route 114 is a good thing.

“I think there is some appeal to creating a campus-style approach,” Day said.

Gentle Dental is coming to Route 1 Saugus

Gentle Dental of Saugus
1423 Broadway (Rt. 1)
Saugus, MA 01906
Tel: 781-941-2900

Route One Saugus

Gentle Dental of Massachusetts announced today the opening of its 25th office in Massachusetts. The newest Gentle Dental practice is located at 1423 Broadway (Route 1) in Saugus. Signage for the practice will be erected within the coming weeks.

The office is slated to open December 1, 2009.

The opening of the Saugus practice becomes Gentle Dental’s 4th practice on the Massachusetts North Shore.

CEO Dr. Ronald Weissman states “Saugus is an excellent town to open our 25th practice. Route 1 is a thriving business area with thousands of people each day traveling to and from the North Shore. We’re exciting to become a part of the rich heritage of Route 1 businesses.” The practice is located just after the Essex Street overpass on Route 1 North, and just after The Square One Mall on Route 1 South. The practice is easily accessible from both directions by car, or by MBTA bus via the Square One Mall station.

The new Saugus practice will become Gentle Dental’s 3rd “paperless office”. Electronic versions of patient’s charts as well as chair-side presentation of treatment plans via flat screen monitors are just two aspects that make the office paperless.

Keeping in the tradition of Gentle Dental, the Saugus location is committed to providing quality dental care with affordable fees.

All Gentle Dental locations are open evening and Saturday hours, have specialists on staff, accept insurance and offer payment plans for those seeking financial alternatives.

With 25 practices in Eastern Massachusetts, Gentle Dental has been providing affordable dental care for over 25 years.

LYNNFIELD – The Board of Selectmen approved a handful of licenses on Monday for restaurant newcomer Fat Cactus, which will soon become the third restaurant in so many years to occupy the lot at 215 Broadway, former home of Lucille’s Fine Chicken and the Naked Fish Restaurant.

Fat Cactus was touted as an “authentic Mexican family-style restaurant” by owner Mark Colangelo, who also owns the nearby Bostonville Grille with his wife Karen. The new restaurant will include a bar area and two back rooms with three pool tables and 10 video games for children. Occasional entertainment could include a mariachi band, but Colangelo said the restaurant would not be a venue for loud music.

“As far as rock and roll in the bar area, that’s not the setting that we’re looking for,” he said. “We expect there to be a lot of children in the restaurant.”

Attorney Michael McCarthy of Wakefield represented the Colangelos during Monday’s public hearing, stressing the couple’s track record as successful restaurant owners and pointing to the Bostonville Grille as a venue that gives back to the community.

“They’re good citizens and they’re good neighbors,” he said, listing off the restaurant’s contributions to little league teams and charitable organizations.

McCarthy also pointed out that Fat Cactus would be taking over a lot that is currently vacant in a down economy, generating an estimated 50 new jobs.

“Obviously it will be good for the tax base,” he said.

The board unanimously approved the transfer of liquor license from Naked Restaurants, Inc. to the Fat Cactus and granted separate licenses for pool tables, video games, food service and entertainment on weekdays and on Sundays after 1 p.m.

The tentative operating hours for the establishment will be weekdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. A Mexican buffet brunch is planned for Sunday mornings. As is the case at Bostonville Grille, the Fat Cactus will be allowed to serve alcohol until 1 a.m. every night and all of the restaurant’s servers will be TIPS certified. Bostonville Grille manager Matthew Greer will be overseeing operations at the Fat Cactus as well, said Colangelo, and neighbors can rest easy when it comes to late night loitering.

“We get them right out of there when it’s time to go,” he said.

Santarpio’s World Famous Pizza Coming to Route One Peabody. It’s OFFICIAL!

Article Courtesy of: The Boston Herald

Santarpio’s, the next generation

It’s official.

Old school East Boston pizza institution Santarpio’s is expanding after 107 years.

The fourth generation of Santarpio’s plans to open, in Peabody by May, a second location of the perennial “Best of Boston” winner.

Their company won bankruptcy court approval on Wednesday to purchase the former Bennigan’s on Route 1 North for $1.8 million.

The 300-seat restaurant will be twice the size of the original.

Siblings Carla, Joia and Frank Santarpio have wanted to expand for a while.

“My father retired five years ago, and we’ve been planning to do something since then,” Carla Santarpio said.

The family will replicate what’s made them a success in East Boston since 1903 — first as a bakery and then as a pizza joint — and landed them on GQ magazine’s list of the top 25 pizza places in America last year.

“There are four siblings and some cousins, and we’re going to basically do everything,” Santarpio said. “We make our own dough, we cut our own meat and we make our own sausages.”

The company has purchased a liquor license for the Peabody location, but needs city approval.

“I’m excited,” Santarpio said. “We have six kids in our family. They’re all teenagers and they’re coming to work.

The fifth generation is ready.”

Santarpios Pizza on Route One??? No Way!

There’s an old joke on the North Shore. It’s the pizza directions joke.

“Hey buddy where do get a good pizza around here?” Anthony replies: “Go past the Revere House of Pizza, then pass Domino’s Pizza and take a right at the end of Broadway, when you see the big church on the left take a left, pass Maggio’s and Billy Tse’s and keep going till ya see the water, then ask around for Bianchi’s Pizza.” The same is true for Everett, Malden, Saugus, Wakefield and Medford. We all use pizza parlors as landmarks. Route One has Prince and Polcari’s (Pizzeria Regina) and now Santarpios.

Route One Saugus News has heard that the old Bennigans Peabody Route 1 North Bound location is soon to be pizza lovers heaven. Santarpios Route One Peabody!

The pizza ovens are on the way! For pizza lovers all over the North Shore, Boston and the WORLD this is BIG NEWS.

The sometimes hard to find original Santarpios circa 1903 location in East Boston has always needed a suburban location. What better place than on Route One?!

Put me on the guest list for the first ever Route One Pizza Crawl! Yum! Last stop Santarpios. Make mine with onions, a double lamby bamby on the side, extra peppers and a bottle of chantay.

A classic old-school pizza joint in East Boston might soon have a second location.

According to both The Hubster and Grub Street Boston, Santarpio’s Pizza is looking at possibly moving into the old Bennigan’s spot on Route 1 in Peabody (the Bennigan’s in Peabody closed last year after the chain filed for bankruptcy). The Hubster states that if all goes as planned, the new Santarpio’s might open by March of 2010, though Grub Street Boston mentions that the new Peabody location won’t be a sure thing until the middle of December.

Santarpio’s first opened as a bakery in East Boston more than a hundred years ago, with the pizzeria opening in the 1930s. The Chelsea Street restaurant and bar has become a local institution over the years, and is considered by many to have the best pizza in the Greater Boston area. In addition to pizza, Santarpio’s also offers sausage and lamb skewers, as well as beer and wine.

For more information on the possible opening of a second Santarpio’s in Peabody, please go to The Hubster and Grub Street Boston links below.

Until now, the legendary Santarpio’s name has been safeguarded: no other locations and no retail products.

It seems, however, that the family has purchased the site of the former Bennigan’s on Route 1 in Peabody and they intend to call the new place Santarpio’s.

After renovations, the eatery is scheduled to open in March. It’s unclear so far how similar the menu will be to the landmark East Boston restaurant.

Santarpio’s Lenny Timpone tells us that the opening won’t be definite until mid-December, so suburban pizza, sausage, and lamb enthusiasts should keep their fingers crossed until then.

Putting toppings at bottom adds to flavor of Santarpio’s

Santarpio’s customers settle into the blue vinyl booths and feast on barbecue and pizza — thin and crisp and served on battered metal trays — every day, from noon to midnight. You can hear hoarse laughter from the regulars at the bar, some couples hum to Jimmy Roselli records on the jukebox, and neighborhood cops come in through the back door to pick up a few pies to go. The lights are dim, the ceilings low, and the walls covered with autographed photographs and classic fight posters.

The East Boston pizza house opened for business in 1903. Three Santarpio brothers came from Naples and began with a bread bakery. “They cooked for princes in Italy and had about a dozen kids each,” says Lennie Timpone, 61, whose mother was a Santarpio, and who has worked here all his life.

These days fourth – generation sisters Carla Santarpio, 40, and Joia Santarpio, 33, and their 41-year old brother, Frank, run the place. Their dad, Frank Santarpio, and their older brother, Joseph Santarpio, retired two years ago and the younger siblings took over. “Joia is my godchild,” says Timpone. “Now she’s my boss.”

The menu is simple: pizza, bread, and barbecue. Most days the sisters work the pizza oven, wait tables, and take phone orders. Frank goes back and forth between the bar and the oven, and Timpone bartends and sees to the back room butcher shop. He brews big pots of Maxwell House, rests his wristwatch and glasses on the meat grinder, switches on his little radio (“This time of year it’s just Christmas songs,” he says), and then spends hours breaking down pork butts and lamb forequarters for the barbecue skewers.

Every morning for 30 years, baker Glenn Carlton has baked the bread and mixed the pizza dough. The sisters come in around 9 and take over. “The dough is easy, it’s just flour, water, yeast, and salt,” says Carla. On a typical day they make up to 300 pies. For every pizza they pull a floppy ball of dough out of the proofer, press it down flat on the counter and stretch it hand over hand over hand until it’s thin and round.

“Throwing the dough up in the air would just be all for show,” says Carla.

They lay the discs of stretched dough, two at a time, on a wooden peel dusted with coarse cornmeal. They sprinkle on the toppings first, then the cheese (3 types of mozzarella mixed together) and finally the sauce.

“Most places do the exact opposite, but we think the toppings cook better on the bottom,” says Carla. The sauce is just crushed tomatoes — “They’re the good ones, the same tomatoes that we put in the gravy at our Sunday night dinners at home,” says Carla — and dried herbs reduced together for a few hours over a low flame.

Timpone says that people are always asking him for the sauce’s secret ingredient. “When I tell them how simple it is , they think I’m lying,” he says.

To finish, the pies get a drizzle of olive oil from an old Smirnoff Vodka bottle, then about 10 minutes in the 550-degree oven. Santarpio’s had a brick pizza oven but got rid of it about 50 years ago. They’re now on their second gas- powered Reed revolving tray oven from Kansas City. It has five shelves and can hold 40 pizzas at a time. “It’s as hot as we need it to be, and I cook pizza just the way I like them — nice and crunchy,” says Joia.

During the day, the women take turns working the pizza station, then hand it over to various long time bakers.

o

Whenever he has a chance, Timpone likes to get in front of the oven. “You never forget how to do it,” he says. “I’ve been doing this since I was a little boy.”

The neighborhood has changed a lot over the past few decades. “I remember when the whole area here used to be all coldwater flats and all the old ladies would get big blocks of ice delivered in sawdust,” says Timpone. “Now the neighborhood people are gone, those days are gone. We’re still crazy busy on the weekends and holidays but during the week it’s quieter than it was in the old days.”

Joia studied fashion design at Mount Ida College and Carla has a business degree from Suffolk University. Neither sister intended to work at Santarpio’s full time. “My father never wanted this for us,” says Joia. “It started as a summer job and something to do on the weekends, but that was 15 years ago. I’d be a fool to leave though. I make my own hours and I see my family every day. We’re all like family here. If someone has a baby it’s a big deal. If some one gets sick it’s a big deal. I know most people don’t have that at work. This place feels like home to us. It’s what we know.”
